“Every global manager who has raised in Japan has rebuilt the same information from scratch. PMIJ exists so the next one does not have to.”
Institutional frameworks for Japan's private markets
The information layer Japan's private markets never had.
PMIJ built it.
One standard. Used by every allocator, applied to every manager.
Who we are
A Japan-based institute, led by practitioners.
PMIJ is a Japan-based institute. We develop the shared standards, research and infrastructure Japan's private markets have never had. We are founded and led by practitioners with direct institutional experience. Our President has spent over 20 years in manager evaluation and selection, including as a gatekeeper managing director and head of private equity at a Japanese trust bank.
We bring together four groups that rarely sit at the same table with a shared vocabulary: Japanese institutional allocators, global private-markets managers, advisors and gatekeepers, and specialist contributors in law, tax, audit and compliance. PMIJ does not replace any of their roles. We build the common ground they meet on.
We are not a fund, a placement agent, or a licensed advisor. We do not rate, endorse, or recommend. We build standards; the institutions make the decisions.
What we do
Standards, research, and dialogue.
Standards & Readiness Frameworks
Shared frameworks for LP readiness, manager disclosure, diligence and reporting: one baseline instead of a different one for every allocator.
→02Research & Market Practice
Practical guidance on what Japan actually expects: disclosure norms, operating expectations and how practice is shifting.
→03Programmes & Dialogue
Cohort programmes, working sessions and forums that turn shared frameworks into shared practice.
→Why we do it
The information layer Japan's private markets never had.
“PMIJ does not manage money or rate funds. That is exactly what makes the standard trustworthy.”
“Readiness, disclosure, diligence, reporting: one shared standard for Japan.”
“Standards imposed from outside do not get used. Standards built with the market do.”
“Clearer expectations mean more capital moves, with more confidence.”
“PMIJ makes Japan's private markets easier to enter and easier to evaluate.”
